Adventures in the world
I like to travel, go places, see different things, experience new cultures, talk to strangers. Here are a few of my adventures in written form. Some more exist in German version on the other half of this site.
- Crossing the US West to East – In April 2004, my friend Salman and I drove from Salt Lake to Boston.
- Cognac – In May 2010, I went to western France to replenish my stock of cognac that had run dry.
- The Silence of Hama – With this piece, I shot for the TNT travel writing award but didn't even make it to the shortlist. Apparently the story doesn't hold too much appeal to Antipodeans romping through the world on a gap year. On the upside, it's certainly better written than most other submissions.
- Istanbul – Two Worlds – In March 2006, my friend Michael and I spent one week in Turkey's biggest and most riotous city.
- Jordan – Thirty Years Later – My reading of Jonathan Raban's Arabia coincided with my third trip to Jordan. I saw some interesting parallels.
- Sounds of Sadness – In December 2010, I went to Lisbon for a weekend and was captivated by the sounds of fado.
- Falling Water – In July 2009, I was blown away by the Niagara Falls.
- Sitting it out – Towards the end of January 2006, snow tried to break my plans to fly to Chicago.
- An afternoon at Philadelphia – A leisurely afternoon at Philadelphia International Airport.
- Skiing the skies – Coming back from Chicago, I was dreaming of more snow.
- Welcome and Easy – In the fall of 2010, I went to Syria for ten days. Sandwiched between stays in Damascus and Aleppo was a road trip through the Syrian hinterland, an unforgettable experience that's retold here.
- Tunisian Mosaic – In February 2005, my sister and I spent a marvelous week in and around Sousse.
